Panca Kōsa joins two of the oldest ideas held on this island with the standards of the finest houses: character, calm, cuisine, courtesy and charm.
Panca Maha Bhuta
In Balinese Hindu thought, everything that exists is woven from five great elements: pertiwi the earth, apah water, teja fire, bayu air and akasa space. They are honoured in every offering, and they are present in every house: in its stone, its pool, its hearth, its breeze and its open sky.
Pañcakośa
The Upanishads describe the self as five layers, or kośa, from the outermost to the innermost: the body, the breath, the mind, the layer of knowing, and at the centre, joy. To be truly rested, every layer must be cared for, not only the body.
Anakōsa carries the word in its name. Panca Kōsa is how we read the two fives together: each element of the house is given the care of one layer of the guest.
I · earth · character
A house rooted in its ground.
Architecture that belongs to its place, built from honest materials and kept with care. Every house carries a story of the land it stands on.
Vijñānamaya the layer of knowing. To belong to a place is to understand it. A house with roots lets you know where you are.
II · water · calm
Stillness, like water at rest.
True privacy, deep quiet and water at the heart of the house. Nights are silent; mornings begin slowly.
Manomaya the layer of the mind. The mind settles the way water does, when nothing stirs it.
III · fire · cuisine
The warmth of the hearth.
In Bali the kitchen is the home of fire. A chef cooks for you at the villa, from the markets and farms of the island.
Annamaya the layer of the body. The body is made of what it is given. Agni, the inner fire, turns good food into strength.
IV · air · courtesy
Care you feel, but rarely see.
Like air, the best service is everywhere and invisible. One host from arrival to departure, a concierge at any hour, and security that never intrudes.
Prāṇamaya the layer of breath. Bayu is prāṇa, the breath of life. Where care is everywhere and unseen, you breathe more slowly.
V · space · charm
The space where memory lives.
What remains after you leave: a ritual at dawn, a birthday remembered, a sunset that seemed arranged for you alone.
Ānandamaya the layer of joy. The innermost layer is joy. It lives in space, and in the moments you carry home.
Bayu · air · peace of mind
The same person meets you at arrival and sees you off.
